Altun Ha translates to rockstone water from Yucatec Maya. It’s found in the Belize District, about 34 miles north or an hour away from Belize City. In 1968, it was the site of discovery for the largest carved jade object ever found in the Maya world – the Jade Head.
In Yucatec Maya, “Xunan” means Lady and “Tunich” means stone so in English this translates to “Stone Lady”. Xunantunich is found in the Cayo District, about 2 hours away from Belize City.
Barton Creek Cave was once inhabited by the ancient Mayan civilization. It’s considered an important archaeological site since it was used as a burial place. It’s amazing rock formations make it the perfect place for a guided canoe tour downstream or a refreshing swim if you’re curious enough.
